Discovering Quimper

Quimper, capital of Cornwall, is a small town labeled "City of Art and History". It is easily visited on foot and has no shortage of points of interest. Here are our 5 favorite activities to do with the family in Quimper.

Saint-Corentin Cathedral

This cathedral took 300 years to see the light of day. Beautifully restored (the restoration lasted almost 20 years!), It has a particularity: the nave is not aligned with the choir! The most likely hypothesis is that the axis was shifted during construction due to the river passing nearby. Some may also see there a reference to the bent head of Christ on his cross.

Near the cathedral, admire the statue of the legendary king of Armorica, King Gradlon. According to legends and historical accounts, he is credited with the founding of the city around the 5th or 6th century. In the cathedral, you will find a stained glass window which represents him alongside Saint Corentin.

If you are interested in Breton legends, immerse yourself in the legend of the city of Ys, the submerged city off the coast of Douarnenez . In front of the cathedral, you will find the Museum of Fine Arts of Quimper, where you can admire a painting by Evariste-Vital Luminais entitled “The flight of King Gradlon” which is inspired by this myth.

Beaux-arts museum

The Musée des Beaux Arts in Quimper has a rich permanent collection with a collection of paintings from the Pont Aven school, French, Italian, Flemish and Dutch painting from the 14th century to the present day. The temporary exhibitions held twice a year are always of high quality. Children will also enjoy it, since the museum offers a fun and educational room with free access, and a game booklet to discover the museum with the family.

Do not hesitate to visit the museum website to know more.

The museum is open continuously from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in July-August. Full price: 5 € / free for children under 12

The Breton Departmental Museum

Near the Place Saint Corentin, in the Former Palace of the Bishops of Cornouaille, is the Breton departmental museum. Museum of popular art and history, it presents the history of Brittany from prehistory to the present day. It is an ideal museum to visit with the family to better understand the local heritage, discover the costumes and the art of traditional embroidery.

The Retirement Garden

Don’t miss the retirement garden, at the top of rue Elie Fréron. Well known to locals, it’s a hidden gem, small corner of greenery in the city center, sheltered from the wind. Ideal for strolling or having a quick snack with the children.

Shops

Take advantage of your stroll to admire the half-timbered houses (there are 73 in all) and unique architectural details, such as little Glazik and his lover Philomène, rue Kéréon.

For the greediest, a stop is essential to taste the delicious Philomène macaroons , an institution for over 50 years.

The streets of the historic center of Quimper are home to many independent shops. You will inevitably find a souvenir to bring back from your vacation!
